Simple Blessings of the Weekend

Saturday was fun with friends...sweet Bella, and catching up with Courtney and Hannah! (Who we did not get any pictures with-we were too busy talking!) :) LOL
Some crazier moments...as is pictured above. LOL (I am risking my reputation posting this!) LOL :)

Sunday, a beautiful dance recital where my beautiful younger sisters perfomed wonderfully!
(Stay tuned on My Simple Blessed Life and Sara's Scribblings for more pictures!)

Amazing love, amazing grace.
The dances were SO God glorifying and beautiful. Many of them were fun, such as my two favorites: Out of Zion, a Messianic hip-hop dance that Sara did and Operator, a jitter-bug dance Bella was a part of. :)

Monday-a day of rest and relaxation. The girls had an excess of flowers and these beautiful roses I put in a vase next to my bed on my nightstand. The baby's breath, ferns in the back and light pink and then the cream roses left me breathless with delight. I LOVE looking at these!

A new book that is perfect for my season of life that is incredibly encouraging and inspiring.

Yummy lemon ginseng green tea, a beautiful reminder on the mug "Love Never Fails," devotionals often flipped through and the Word of the Lord. The Lord never ceases to speak to me through those age-old pages.

~Stay tuned for a Frugal Fashion Finds pt. 2 later on this week when I post some of my favorite outfits I've worn lately...and the great deals~

Jo March-a Character Study & Application

This young woman is the main character of Louisa May Alcott's work "Little Women." She is also the character who is the personification of Alcott herself. The story begins when Jo March (short for Josephine) is fifteen and longing to be a man in the army doing real work instead of being a female, sitting at home sewing. Through-out the story the reader learns her strengths, weaknesses, failures and triumphs as she matures to womanhood. Jo, one of the most well-known classic literature heroines, is portrayed by Katherine Hepburn, June Allyson and Winona Ryder in the three film versions of "Little Women." Below, I will list her strengths, weaknesses and how I relate to Miss Jo March through out the story.
~~~
Strengths:
~Creative: Jo creates countless stories and plays to entertain her family. She finds joy in creating and entertaining her family even though she thinks she would rather be at war with the rest of the men.
~Sacrificial Giving/Love: Jo March learns the character trait of sacrificial giving of her time in some things she would not have chosen. She serves her aunt and comes to realize her aunt is just lonely and feels compassion for her. She sacrifices her Christmas dollar to buy Marmee a special gift. One of the highlights of the novel is when she sells her hair rather than asking cantankerous old Aunt March for funds for Marmee. She is humbled and a little saddened after she sells it but realizes it is for the greater good.
~~~
Weaknesses:
~Prideful: she receives correction with stubbornness but realizes, later she needs it for growth.
~Her tongue often gets her in trouble: Jo is often harsh with her sister, Amy, who is just as stubborn and headstrong as she is. She speaks plainly and often too bluntly.
~Discontent: this struggle she overcomes through out the book and it is encouraging to see the growth. She struggles with the desire to be a man and serve in the army instead of on the home front. She occasionally struggles with discontentment with being poor but realizes it is better to be poor and be loved, than be wealthy and unloved.
~~~
These are just a few of Jo's many facets and I can relate with all of them. One fault struggle not mentioned was her short struggle against vanity. When she sells her hair, she nonchalantly brushes the deed aside as her contribution to the war effort but during the night she cries as she fingers her bobbed hair. I recently asked Mum if she would just trim the split ends off of my hair. An hour or more later and almost five inches of hair on our deck, I thank Mum for her good job evening out my rather unruly hair and rush inside to finish chores. I loved my waist-length hair and didn't want to see it shorter! Dear Mum (she truly is my Marmee) asks if I don't want to see my new 'do' in the mirror. I shrug it off and insist on finishing chores. Finally, I looked in the mirror and was shocked at what a mere 4 1/2 inches could do. It frames my face, I can run my fingers through it without it snagging and I can now wash it much quicker. :) As I quickly ran a brush through my whole head, I really grew to like it. I sheepishly went to dear Mum and apologized for my ungratefulness and vanity. :) I am very grateful for Mum's hair-cutting job and have now come to love my new hair-cut as it is still past my shoulders and much easier to maintain. I felt exactly as Jo did for a few moments but love my 'new' hair cut.
~~~
My tongue often gets me in trouble and has been a stumbling block for me ever since I was young. Just today, when I was in exceptional pain and fatigued, I snapped and was rude to my younger sister even though she helps and serves our family daily with hardly any complaints. I often think I know better than my 'Marmee' in the silliest areas which she has decades more of expertise. The desire for 'my way' blinds me often for opportunities of growth and learning. The Lord's grace is mighty to pick me back up and give me grace for future victory as He is preparing me to be submissive and humble under a husband someday.

The Blessing

The Blessing
Celtic Woman
~~~
When your weary heart is tired
If the world would leave you uninspired
When nothing more of love's desired
My blessing goes with you
When the storms of life are strong
When you're wounded, where you don't belong
When you no longer hear my song
My blessing goes with you
This is my prayer for you
There for you, ever true
Each, every day for you
In everything you do
And when you come to me
And hold me close to you
I bless you
And you bless me, too
~~~
I love this song after I saw to it on Celtic Woman's A New Journey DVD. Lisa Kelly of Celtic Woman sings it and it's musical director, David Downes plays on a beautiful grand piano. Dad just picked up a Celtic Woman music book yesterday for me at the Library and I immediately flipped open to this song. It's a beautiful arrangement and beautifully sung but my favorite part of this song is the meaning of the lyrics.
~~~
In the first chapter of Preparing to Be A Help Meet by Debi Pearl, (great book!) it talks a lot about prayer and how our future husband needs our prayers. I play this song on the piano at least once a day and pray for my future husband whilst I play. I think of the word 'blessing' in this song as 'prayer.' I also am reminded that the Lord has already planned out my courtship, engagement, wedding and marriage so perfect that I cannot even imagine.
A Bookends Tea
This afternoon, after church and lunch, I set about preparing for the promised tea party for Anna and I. Sara had a few things of her own to attend to and she promised she would attend the next tea party. I deemed this special tea party the "Bookends Tea" as Dad calls Anna and I his 'bookends.' :) It was a literary tea and I picked out a few of Anna's most cherished stories to read to her. She picked out my special 'fancy' dress to wear to the tea and waited patiently as I dashed about to set the table. Anna Peony picked out a black velvet and pink tulle polka dotted frock to wear to our special tea and was ever the proper lady-she started to slurp her tea but stopped herself. :) LOL I served my baby sister tea with our best manners in tact before turning to our substantial stack of Anna's (and a few of my) favorite books:
This is deemed a true classic in our home-right up there with Snow White and Rose Red. Before Ronnie and Anna came along, it was just Sara and I. Just like the characters in "Big Sister, Little Sister," pictured above.
Here you can see one of Anna's absolute favorite stories-doesn't the little girl on the cover look just like her?! :) I set it against the vase of flowers because it matched ever so sweetly! On the table in the picture is the stack of the other books we planned to read.
Our two tea-cups Anna picked out. At first she was settled on the pink flowered one for herself but just at the beginning of the tea, she switched. As many of you know, I sort of collect tea-cups and have a substantial collection but Anna picked these and set the theme-pink and gold!!! :)
Miss Anna Lydia Peony Lucy Love Gorecki awaiting her tea ever so politely and lady-likely. :)
The beautiful napkins Anna picked out from my hope chest's collection made by my dear friend Katie.
A close up of the delicious linens set over the far end of the table. :) I had such fun setting these out!!!
The beautiful set Mrs. Henderson bought me for my last birthday-Anna was enchanted with them. :) Thanks and Happy Birthday Mrs. H!! :) Anna requested plain black tea with milk and honey. :)
A close up of the beautiful detailed set!! I love this!!
The pretty peony! :) A true little lady awaiting her tea. :)
In preparation for her ballet picture day just after this tea, I'm reading a ballerina book to her as she sips her second cup of tea. :)
My baby sister and I. What a fun memory-and so girly!! I loved it. :) I told her we have to do this more often and I'm already planning little themes in my mind. :) Next time Sara will come and we'll have even more girly fun for a "Sisters Tea."
Movie Review: The Princess and the Frog
As I sit and type this, I overhear the movie playing. This is such a sweet movie and is sure to become a Disney classic. It is a sweet, sweet story, filled with great music, hilarious comedy and a sobering moment or two.
~~~
The story is focused around Tiana, first a small girl, who vows not to kiss a frog-never ever! In contrast to her friend Lottie (a rather spoiled, disillusioned wealthy girl) who vows she would kiss a hundred frogs if it meant she would marry a prince. It then pans to Tiana all grown up coming home from work exhausted and pours her waitress tips into a jar that says 'Restaurant Fund.' In the beginning of the movie, it is revealed her father has passed away and Tiana perseveres to make her father's restaurant dream a reality. Incidentally, she has become a workaholic. Enter Prince Naveen of Maldonia who comes to town, flat broke and wanting to marry a wealthy girl so he can continue his life of ease and frivolous spending. Enter the Shadow Man who looks like the child of Cruella Deville and Jafar who practices 'voo-doo' and repeatedly refers to 'the other side.' He lures the Prince into his shop, promising to make Prince Naveen rolling in green. Tiana has just enough money for a restaurant but the Realtors tell her she has to top a higher offer in a few days and she grows discouraged just before she goes down to Lottie's party for the prince. She grows discouraged, sees a frog next to her, asks him if he wants a kiss albeit sarcastically, and then before you know it, she's a frog too! They then set off on an expedition to undo the voo-doo-hoo-doo of the Shadow Man and meet a host of hilarious, endearing characters.
~~~
The Pro's:
~~The value of family, and love are emphasized through out the movie, as well as a good work ethic.
~~The typical Disney portrayal of love over money, things, etc. is, of course present but very sweet.
~~The music is great! The jazz is perfectly in tune with 1920's New Orleans and the score is great
~~One of my favorite parts is when **SPOILER** a certain character passes away (almost as sad as when Ellie passes on in 'Up') and a star appears in the sky, making the evening star now, a Disney classic, the second star to the right. I found that very sweet as Peter Pan is set just around that time.
The Con's:
~~The voo-doo of the Shadow Man grows a little intense in one scene near the middle and we skipped it with nary a complaint. **SPOILER** Near the end there is another rather intense scene when the Shadow Man gets what he had coming to him in a flurry of neon, flashy colors and voo-doo symbols that is not as intense as the scene in the middle.
~~The materialism of Lottie is humorously portrayed (quite, I might add :) ) as is her selfishness but a good heart under the pink fluff is revealed through out the movie. :) She's nervous about meeting Prince Naveen and furiously stuffs napkins under her arms and says, "I'm sweatin' like a sinnah 'n church!" We all crack up at that part.
~~~
This is a sweet movie-classic Disney fun. We haven't seen a Disney movie like this in years (though there have been some good ones) and our whole family wholeheartedly loves this film.

Little Women Character Studies-an Introduction

This is the first of a four part series where I will write about each of the four March sisters from Louisa May Alcott's beloved story, Little Women. This book is a favorite of mine and has been since we first read it aloud when I was in 3rd grade. :) I was enchanted with the March girls and how different and unique they all were. Marmee, because Father was away at war, gently guided, chastised, listened and loved her four little women and watched with pride as they all grew up into wonderful women. At the end of the book, Marmee's little women and their children arise up and call her blessed.

~~~
All four of the March girls experience painful growth during their tender years, grief, hardship but also many fun times through out the story. Though they squabble and bicker, there were never such devoted sisters as the March girls. In the beginning of the story they are:
~Margaret (Meg) March, sweet 16 and the mother-hen of all her sisters
~Josephine (Jo) March, a tomboyish 15 year old whose mind never ceases to churn out new stories and dramatic plays
~Elisabeth (Beth) March, a shy and sweet 13 year old who loves the simple things in life-her kittens and her piano
Amy March, a passionate 12 year old girl who strives to impress her friends at school and be disgustingly rich-oh, she also despises her turned up nose. :)
~~~
Over the next four weeks I will highlight each March girl's triumphs, burdens, faults and accomplishments. I will also post what I gleaned from their lessons learned and some of my favorite parts from the novel. So come back here every Friday to see my Little Women Character Studies.

Operation Get Healthy

In an effort to give myself a spring health boost, I've taken to drinking 2 quarts of yummy juice, eating small amounts of protein and exercising each day. (We'll see how the last one pans out) Because of my disability, I would be in less pain each day if I weighed less. I've prayed about losing weight for awhile and am finally beginning to use the great resources the Lord has blessed me with.

They are:

-A Blendtec blender that makes me my breakfast/lunch each day

-Affordable produce (not organic but still good)

-Accountability partners :)

-A small collection of exercise tapes and DVD's, Exercise/Fit TV On Demand and best of all-gorgeous weather to walk in.

I am human-a perfectionist human, may I add. I will fail but with the Lord's unconditional love to pick me back up again and dwell on His love and strength instead of my own failings in this quest for healthfulness.

Good Friends + Thrifty Finds=A Great Day

7:18 a.m Saturday, April 10, 2010. Mum shakes me awake gently and says, "C'mon Meghan, time to wake up! We need to leave soon." I drag myself out of my nice pillow-top mattress and stumble into the bathroom. I come out ten minutes later blinking at the incredibly optimistic and deceiving Mr. Sunshine shining through the windows. After I grab some caffeinated Chai tea in my eight inch tall mug, I throw on some clothes, check my e-mail, pull on my shoes and smile, still somewhat sleepily, at Mum and say, "Okay, I'm ready. Let's go!"
As we head out to South Park, an easy ten minute drive, I yawn so much my jaw starts to ache a little. We arrive, at twenty-past eight, though it starts at 9, and already there is a line covering almost the entire front of the building. We dash (hehe, not so much) over and get in line behind a dear old friend, Mrs. Linda Mckee, and spend the next forty minutes catching up until they open the doors. Last year, I did not accompany Mum on this yearly expedition and last year, they let everyone in early. Apparently a lot of people were unhappy with that so they kept to the opening time of 9:00 a.m rigidly. (Although everyone inside was milling around and all the beautiful, tall stacks of fabric were ready and waiting.) As we stood outside in the 30 something degree breezy air, I asked for the time and then watched as all the ladies inside bowed their heads while a woman prayed. Seeing that eased my shivering impatience. :) Below you will find a picture of my dear Mum and I before we dashed inside: she to the huge display of discount yarn and me to the three huge tables of cotton prints!!! (Ahem, please do not pay attention my sleepy face-what my family calls my 'baby-Meghan face.' :)

At nine-forty, I headed to the check-out before it started to get clogged and I spent more money than I brought with me. :) Mum laughed as she pulled up next to me and said, "I was wondering how I would ever find you!" Her worries were merited because the line we were in, snaked across the whole building, up and almost part-way around the back of it on a hill! I painfully handed my twenty-dollar bill over to the cashier and Mum and I made our way out to reveal our glorious finds to each other at the car. She really cleaned up at this sale, only spending $28 on lots of yarn and a little fabric. :) I brought a twenty-dollar bill with me, planning to spend maybe half but spent all of it except for 25 cents. I got a lot, A LOT of fabric-all great cotton prints for aprons, notebooks, purses, etc. I got a 25 cent bundle of remnants to make Anna some doll clothes that will make up very cute! Underneath here is 'the bag' (emphasis added!) of fabric. The first is to show how big the bag was and then the picture underneath is to reveal how much fabric I got.
Later on, I organized and labeled each and every piece of fabric I owned that I would make into projects this year and I now do not need a single scrap of fabric between the things I bought and the things I already had. :) That was a lot of fun!
This, my dear readers, is only the tip of the iceberg. :) And now for the second part of my Saturday:
~~~
10:45 a.m, same day. Armed with fresh provisions (a.k.a: cash, food and ibuprofen), Sara (who sweetly watched over Anna and Ronnie for us) and I awaited our noble chauffeur to arrive. Last Friday night, Alaina called and asked if we were available to go to three estate-sales and lunch with a few of our mutual friends. In her black mini-van, with Danielle and Sarah Elaine inside, we (after a few minor setbacks such as a photo-op, forgotten keys and handbag of mine) departed from our home, optimistic and excited of the deals we were sure awaited us. Luckily it warmed up considerably from the chilly morning and continued to through the afternoon.
With Alaina at the wheel, Danielle as the navigator, Sarah Elaine, Sara and I as commentators (hehe!) we departed. Alaina braved the many cars lining the street where two of the estate sales were and nobly parallel parked her van! Woo hoo! After a few unsuccessful tries and debating where to park, we alighted from the car and stretched our legs. If you haven't noticed already, this post is dramatized and slightly exaggerated-the ride to these estate sales was ten minutes. :) The first we went to proved very successful for Alaina who is now making room in her bedroom for a hope-chest. She found a beautiful antique trunk and got it half off the quoted price at a beautiful $17.50! It is huge and in good condition and when it is cleaned, will be absolutely beautiful. We stopped off at the second one on that street before going to lunch, after much discussion amongst ourselves, at Olive Garden to get the unlimited soup, salad and bread sticks. Oh. My. Goodness. Was it yummy! Between all of us who ordered similar orders, we polished off three huge bowls of salad and I think that many baskets of bread sticks. :) Sara, Sarah Elaine and I all had delicious chicken and gnocchi soup. We debated getting desserts but with our youth-group's fun-night later that day we opted not to. We just drooled over the dessert menu for a minute or two. :)
At the third estate sale ten minutes away, I really got some steals! Pictured above is, hehe, an old movie that I really enjoy called New Moon. Obviously it's not the newest Twilight movie. :)
I purchased these hand-work books for fifty cents in all. As a lot of you know, I am a cheap-skate so getting so many things so cheaply made my day!
At the first estate sale I found these sweet set of Christmas cloth napkins that I happily set gently in my hopechest. I think I paid two dollars for them. :)
And my last find of the day, at around 3 that afternoon, is this hand-made granny-square afghan that you can see airing in front of my window. I think I bought this for 2 or 3 dollars. :) Sarah Elaine, Sara, Alaina and Danielle all procured a few treasures from these estate sales but I think I was the one who came back with the most stuff! It was a fun day-a whirlwind, to be sure and Sunday I spent the day resting and reflecting on what great friends I have. Speaking of that, I would like to say, in closing, that the general consensus amongst us all was that if one person had been there it would have been perfect:But on June 22nd, 2010, Gabrielle will be here again for not one, not two, but THREE weeks this time!!!!!! We will have to find at least one or two sales to go to with her. During this outing we all talked feverishly about what sort of parties and get-togethers we can have when she's here. But personally, I know Sara and I are a little reluctant to share her. :)
To Run This Race
After worship today I was incredibly encouraged by the words our two pastors spoke and a song we sang today (that will be posted at the end of this post). It gave me strength and pointed my eyes upwards to the Lord instead of on myself and my pain that has been more present in the last few days. The past few days have been enjoyable but even after taking anti-inflammatories I am still weary and sore. I was weary spiritually as well as I asked the Lord, "When will this end? When will you relieve me of this pain for good? Why can't Mum feel better and have more energy and sleep well at nights?" I know the Lord watches me, loves me even when I doubt but the 'why's' were everpresent in my mind this morning.
~~~
Both of my pastors spoke words of encouragement to the congregation that really resonated in my mind. They exhorted people who were weary, (with a job situation, relationship, etc) to look to the all-powerful and sustaining Lord. He will give us strength to run this race and His grace, love is so much bigger than our trials and circumstances. The Lord's eye is on the sparrow and He watches me. I had a picture in my mind whilst singing of a father bending to hold out a tender, work-worn hand to his child who was tired or sad. The child looked up at her daddy's face and her eyes brightened as her hand tightened around his. I am the little girl and the Lord is my loving Father who whispers promises into my heart such as, I will fulfill the desires of your heart, dear one. But even when I grow weary I can just turn my eyes upon Jesus and the Lord's sustaining grace to run this race. In closing, below are the last two verses in a song we sang at church today, called "Grace Unmeasured."
~~~
Grace abounding, strong and true
That makes me long to be like You
That turns me from my selfish pride
To love the cross on which You died
Grace unending all my days
You’ll give me strength to run this race
And when my years on earth are through
The praise will all belong to You
Frugal Fashion Finds Part One
I am not a very fashion-y person but enjoy dressing up and wearing pretty clothes-and especially getting good deals. :) What girl doesn't? Here are two examples of great deals I found and consequently, they are two examples of the fun Spring photo shoot my dear sister Sara forced-ah, gently cajoled me into. :)
This dress I found last week at Fashion Bug when Dad took Sara and I on a date and then shopping for her Easter dress. I already had procured a very cute dress but, with cash and coupon in my wallet, I browsed the clearance section until Sara called me over to look at their dresses. My oh my were they all pretty! I tried one dress on-not looking so great on me overall-so I went back and picked out the above dress. I was a little anxious because it was a wrap dress but tried it on and loved it! This dress was ten dollars off and I had a ten dollar off coupon. It was originally $40 but with sale and coupon, I paid half! Because of our large extensive family, we celebrated Easter twice-once on Saturday with Mum's side (and to celebrate my aunt's 40th) and then Easter Sunday we celebrated with Dad's side. I wore the above dress to Easter with Mum's side of the family-it was a rather warm/balmy day and this was the perfect choice.
My original Easter dress.
I found this at a consignment shop five minutes away from our home called Plus Consignment Boutique. They were having an open house and Mum took Sara and I, and our two friends, to look through their beautiful clothes since I was in need of an Easter dress. I pulled this off the rack and looked at hopefully, and albeit dubiously, and tried it on. Mum told me she wasn't sure she would like it but to my delight, she loved it (as did I) when I tried it on. It was a size too big but with the sash it didn't matter. I found it for a beautiful 17 dollars and on Easter Sunday, paired it with black high-heels.
Here is a picture from Easter Saturday of my dear photographer and I. She was so sweet to patiently deal with my rather insecure protests during the photo shoot. :) As many of you know, I'm not the biggest fan of having my picture taken but Sara made it very fun with lots of laughs. :) Part two coming soon about two other frugal fashion finds from a clearance rack.
Alleluia!
Christ is risen!
Every Easter morn, Mum tells us 'Christos Voskres' translated into English from Slovak means, "Christ is risen!" This is a simple, long-standing tradition in our family and one I will cherish. Have a blessed Resurection Sunday praising the Savior of the world who stooped down into this world to save us all from our sins. I thought it would be appropriate to post two verses of a traditional Easter hymn in many churches that perfectly expresses the true meaning of Easter.
Christ the Lord is Risen Today!
v. 2 & 3
Love's redeeming work is done, Alleluia!
Fought the fight, the battle won, Alleluia!
Death in vain forbids him rise, Alleluia!
Christ has opened paradise, Alleluia!
~~~
3. Lives again our glorious King, Alleluia!
Where, O death, is now thy sting? Alleluia!
Once he died our souls to save, Alleluia!
Where's thy victory, boasting grave? Alleluia!

Good Friday

Thank you, wonderful, merciful Savior, precious redeemer and friend for shedding Your blood for sinners like me! Your body is the bread, your blood the wine, broken and poured out all for love. The whole earth trembled and the veil was torn this day thousands of years ago! Thank you, Jesus Messiah.
~~~
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died
My richest gain I count but loss
And pour contempt on all my pride
See from his head, his hands, his feet
Sorrow and love flow mingled down
Did ever such love and sorrow meet
Or thorns compose so rich a crown
O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
Bids me come and die and find that I may truly live
O the wonderful cross, O the wonderful cross
All who gather here by grace draw near and blessYour name
Were the whole realm of nature mine
That were an offering far too small
Love so amazing, so divine
Demands my soul, my life, my all
